How to Avoid Weight Gain During Chemotherapy

For Patsy M., the cancer was bad enough. Then came the chemo and her energy level took a dramatic tumble while her once trim figure ballooned. She tried watching what she ate. Cut down on portions. Nothing helped. The weight kept climbing.

When she asked her doctor she was told to exercise. It was the best answer to chemo weight-gain. This wasn't what she wanted to hear. She didn't feel like exercising. Some days it was all she could do to move from bed to couch. Then a friend told her about a neighbor who was going through chemo as if it was a Sunday school picnic.

She continued shopping, visiting friends AND EXERCISING. Claimed it had to do with taking some simple sugars called glyconutritionals. "Sounds like one of those whiz-bang miracle things, if you ask me," Patsy replied. "You see them advertised all the time and most of them don't have a stitch of healing in them." Her friend nodded, "I agree, except glyconutritional is a scientific name not a brand name. And my neighbor claims there is a ton of medical research behind them.

Not to mention a few Nobel Peace Awards in Medicine and a thousand or more medical journal reports?""If that's true, how come my doctor never told me about these simple sugars?""Because he might not have heard about them. Doctors have a hard enough time keeping up with developments in their own field without getting into food and food supplements. Although my neighbor did say that many doctors have begun incorporating the simple sugars into their practice." "So what's it supposed to do for me?""Help create more energy so you'll feel more like doing what your doctor told you to do...exercise." Patsy still looked doubtful. "Why can't I just eat an energy bar?""Wrong kind of sugars. They will do you more harm than good.

According to my neighbor, these eight simple sugars go directly to your body cells. It has something to do with building and strengthening your cell's communication system. This in turn enables your cells to order in whatever they need to make repairs and stay healthy."Patsy still wasn't convinced. "And that's supposed to give me more energy?""Well, actually the simple sugars do a whole lot more than help create energy. But wouldn't that alone be a blessing? You might feel good enough to start exercising and working off some of that bulge peeking over the top of your jeans." Patsy glared at her friend.

"Well, thank you very much. I can always count on you to make me feel good about myself. So where do I get these simple sugars?""I don't really remember. As I recall, my neighbor said there was only one company making a true and all-natural blend of the simple sugars. But I don't remember the name.

I think it started with an ?M'.""That's real helpful. Maybe you ought to worry less about the bulge around my middle and find yourself some brain food. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm worn out with all this energy and exercise talk. I think I'll go lie down.".

Boxer Shorts

Boxer shorts are underwear made usually for men. They were dubbed "boxer shorts" because they were patterned from those worn by professional boxers.

Boxer shorts first appeared in the 1930s, but they weren't so popular since men back then were so accustomed to briefs. It was only two decades later those boxer shorts gained a following. It needed one Nick Kaman to wear them in a popular jeans-brand outdoor billboard advertisement in the 1980s. Even though up to now, boxers are still not as popular as briefs, there is a swelling preference for boxers today.

Boxer shorts have certain advantages compared to other underwear.

The majority of surveys say that women prefer seeing boxer shorts on men. The opening in front of the boxer shorts allows convenience for men when nature calls. There are also more patterns, styles, and colors available on boxer shorts as compared to briefs. They can also be taken off more easily. Doctors also say that the cool temperature...

A Special Kind Of Love

My grandmother taught me to crochet the moment my clumsy, chubby fingers could hold a crochet hook. By the time that I was six, she handed me her sewing needles to thread for her because her eyes could no longer see the needle's eye. When I was eight, my mother spent all of her precious off-work night-time hours making me a spring wardrobe that I can still describe in minute detail, right down to the rick-rack that trimmed the red kerchief that matched the tulip sprigged sleeveless dress. I can recall precisely the colors and patterns of the nightgowns my grandmother sewed for me. My brothers will tell you that they've never worn anything so warm and comfortable as Nana's knitted socks.

I even remember the weight of the stocking cap my mother knit to match the checkerboard cardigan - that matched the blue one she knit for my brother. There is a magic in handmade clothing that transcends the colors, the styles, even the quality of the handiwork. It's as if every stitch and every...

Fisherman Sweater History

The Fisherman Sweater Fisherman sweaters used to be something that were seen as items of warm and rugged work wear, but much as changed, and fisherman sweaters have followed jeans to make that transformation from work wear to a 20th century fashionable clothing item.Fisherman Sweater HistoryRooted in our common heritage, commercial fishermen, weekend sailors, farmers and in fact people from all walks of life love the fisherman sweater. At sea, and in town, it is a symbol of simpler times when you could look good in something that was designed just to be practical and keep you warm, not to show off a label in order to be some kind of status symbol like many garments manufactured today. The fisherman sweater has its origins in Brittany. Surprisingly it was not the fishermen that started to wear them, but merchants who during the 18th century travelled to England to sell onions, these merchants wore an item of knitted wool clothing that made them recognizable from a distance, the garments...

How to Avoid a Flip-Flop Flap in the Office

New Hope, PA (ContentDesk) July 30, 2005 -- By now most of the world has heard about the "flip-flop flap" -- the controversy the Northwestern University women's lacrosse team caused when they wore flip-flops to their photo-op with President Bush. However, if flip-flops are a no-no at the White House, does that mean that they are a yes-yes at the office?"When I was a child, flip-flops were attire for going to the beach or the pool only," says certified etiquette and protocol consultant Leah Ingram. "You might get away with wearing them to the mall or the movies but you would never enter a house of worship or a government office wearing them. Unfortunately, flip-flops have become so ubiquitous that frequently I see young women wearing them to church, to special occasions, to the office and now, as the national media has recorded, to the White House."With Labor Day right around the corner and the official end of summer, workers everywhere could use a fashion refresher from a good manners...

9 Simple tips to protect you and your things while moving

Adding to the excitement or nervousness of moving is the dilemma of packing. Mankind, being pack rats, tends to gather a lot of clutter over the years --things of use, of sentimental value, gifts, brick-a brack, and family heirlooms. Some are treasured while others tolerated. When the time comes to move there are hard and heartrending decisions to make.

Determine how much you are allowed to take with you.

Find out the floor space in your new home. Be practical and:

? Make a list of "must haves."

? Arrange to put all other things in storage or have an auction or garage sale.

? Put aside things you want to give to charity.

? Disconnect, clean, and repair appliances a week before packers arrive.

? Make arrangements to transport plants and pets or find new homes for them. Most packers will not transport plants and pets. You will need to take them by car, train, or plane to your new destination....
